At a press conference Thursday, Greenville County Schools Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster announced that, starting Tuesday January 19th, Greenville County high schools will increase in-person instruction days from two days per week to three-to-four days per week.

Students currently attend two days determined by an assigned color-coded group. Starting January 19th, one day between Monday through Thursday will be added for each of those groups.

In addition, students will also attend three out of every four Fridays on a rotating schedule of three in-person Fridays in a row followed by a virtual-learning Friday that will repeat on rotation.

 

“We’ve known from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that high schools pose the biggest challenge when it comes to returning students to the classroom,” Dr. Royster said. “This plan allows us to nearly double the amount of in-person instruction at high schools and return most Career Center students to fulltime in-person instruction allowing them to work toward their industry certification.”

I remember thinking (as if in Animal House), “This is really great,” while helping hoist up the new, state-of-the-art, curved screen — back before the age of giant multiplex movie palaces at the mall. Those were days when, if you knew who was working, you could sneak into the “closed” balcony, which was strewn with beat-up old sofas and delightfully dark. It was big news when the cushier seats replaced what felt like WWII-vintage ones. But thankfully the new comfort didn’t blot out the Mayberry charm.

 

When I was just starting my business, I’d rent the theater for my all-day Saturday travel lectures. I’d set up a stepladder in the middle of the seats, balance the old projector high, and run my hard-wired “clicker” under the seats to the stage, feeling quite high-tech to be able to advance the slides from that distance.

And today, the Edmonds Theater remains the place I favor for enjoying a new movie. Sure, there are fancier places out at the mall. But to buy your ticket from someone who knows your name and to see a movie in a classic old theater on a classic old Main Street with a soft drink and a big bag of popcorn — a moviegoing ritual for 40 years and counting — that’s something to treasure…and to be thankful for.

 

Like so many beloved businesses, COVID-19 has landed our theater on hard times. These are the small businesses — the labors of love, the moms-and-pops, the plucky entrepreneurial ventures — that give our communities character. This pandemic will take a lot of lives before it’s history.

Behind the church, at Antico Frantoio Bruschetteria, an olive press — the latest in a 2,000-year line of olive presses — fills an ancient Etruscan cave. Brothers Sandro and Felice sell bruschetta to visitors. Bread is toasted on an open fire, drizzled with the finest oil, rubbed with garlic, and topped with chopped tomatoes. These edible souvenirs stay on my breath for hours and in my memory forever.

 

As I walk back to my car to re-enter the modern world, I stop under a lamp on the donkey path and just listen. I listen to the canyon…distant voices…animals on humble farms…fortissimo crickets…the same sounds villagers heard here when their town was still alive.

The theater is filled with memories, from when first Mr. Kniest and then Jacques Mayo — community leaders who ran the theater, it seemed, more to give our town character and charm rather than to make money — would lovingly introduce the featured film in person.

Thats What I Do I Keep Bees And I Know, Every College Football season, I look forward to many games, but three always stand out — THE Game #1 (Harvard/Yale); THE Game #2 (Ohio State/Michigan); and Army/Navy. Unfortunately, COVID-19 (and 2020 in general) have upended our lives in many horrible, awful ways…so missing a few football games, in the overall scheme of things, isn’t really a big deal. Still, the Ivy League canceled its season before it even began.

 

This year’s Midshipmen Army-Navy uniform pays tribute to the naval academy with numerous special features seen around campus, also known as the Yard. 

The blue and white marble pattern on the helmet and shoulders mimics the stone as a prominent accent on the academy’s grounds, including the crypt of John Paul Jones, the Father of the American Navy, who has been laid to rest in the naval academy chapel. 

 

It is also found within Bancroft Hall, the largest dormitory in the country, named after George Bancroft who founded the naval academy during his time as Secretary of the Navy.

Navy football also honors the Marine Corps by sporting its emblem embroidered on the pants of this year’s uniform; and the naval academy seal, established Jan. 25, 1899, takes center stage in gold on the shoulders and gloves.
